Dementia is the progressive loss or reduction of cognitive abilities, either partially or completely, permanently or momentarily and sporadically, sufficiently important to cause a loss of autonomy of the individual. Among the potentially reversible causes are metabolic, endocrine and hydroelectrolytic dysfunctions, infectious conditions, nutritional deficits, psychiatric disorders, such as depression and diseases that can be treated neurosurgically, mainly hydrocephalus, chronic subdural hematoma, hygroma, and brain tumors. Typically, this cognitive change causes the inability to perform activities of daily living. Cognitive deficits can affect any of the brain functions, particularly the areas of memory, language, attention, visuoconstructive skills, praxis, and executive functions such as problem solving and inhibition of responses. Dementia can also affect comprehension, the ability to identify elements of everyday use, reaction time, and personality traits.
