Spanish

Língua manesa

The manx, manx or manquest (Gaelg or Gailck, AFI: or ɡilɡ) is a Gaelic language spoken on the Isle of Man. The last inhabitant of this island to use it as their mother tongue was Ned Maddrell, a fisherman who died in 1974. However , by this time many citizens of the island had already engaged in a project to revive the language, learning it as a second language to teach the offspring. The first new native bilingual speakers began to emerge, children educated in Manx by non-native speakers of the language, making up about 300 speakers. Closely related to Scottish Gaelic and Eastern Irish dialects (Ulster and Galloway), the first literary document is a translation of an Anglican prayer book circa 1610 commissioned by the Bishop of Sodor and Mann, John Phillips. He met a period of literary splendor in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The historical ballads were preserved in a manuscript of end of century XVIII, that collects an oral tradition previous.
