Nuncio apostólico
Nuncio es el título de un diplomático eclesiástico, siendo enviado o representante diplomático permanente de la Santa Sede ante un Estado o una organización internacional. Un nuncio es nombrado por y representa a la Santa Sede, y es el jefe de la misión diplomática, llamada Nunciatura Apostólica, que es el equivalente de una embajada. La Santa Sede es legalmente distinta de la Ciudad del Vaticano o la Iglesia Católica. Un nuncio suele ser un arzobispo. Un nuncio papal es generalmente equivalente en rango al de embajador extraordinario y plenipotenciario, aunque en los países católicos el nuncio a menudo se sitúa por encima de los embajadores en el protocolo diplomático. Un nuncio desempeña las mismas funciones que un embajador y tiene los mismos privilegios diplomáticos. En virtud de la Convención de Viena sobre Relaciones Diplomáticas de 1961, en la que la Santa Sede es un partido, un nuncio es un embajador como los de cualquier otro país. La Convención de Viena permite al Estado anfitrión otorgar antigüedad de precedencia al nuncio sobre otros de rango de embajador acreditado en el mismo país y puede conceder el diatolicismo del cuerpo diplomático de ese país al nuncio, independientemente de su antigüedad.
