Soberanía
La soberanía se produce cuando una región o pueblo es un tributario de una entidad más poderosa que controla sus asuntos exteriores, al tiempo que permite la autonomía interna del estado vassal tributario. La entidad dominante en la relación de soberanía, o la entidad más poderosa, es llamada suzerain. El término soberanía fue utilizado originalmente para describir la relación entre el Imperio Otomano y sus regiones circundantes. Difiere de la soberanía en que el afluente goza de un cierto gobierno propio. Un suzerain también puede referirse a un señor feudal, a quien los vasallos deben rendir tributo. Aunque es un concepto que ha existido en una serie de imperios históricos, es un concepto que es muy difícil de describir con teorías del derecho internacional del siglo XX o del siglo XXI, en las que la soberanía existe o no. Si bien una nación soberana puede convenir por tratado a convertirse en un protectorado de un poder más fuerte, el derecho internacional moderno no reconoce ningún modo de hacer obligatoria esta relación con el poder más débil.
