Alliage
Un alliage est un mélange ou une solution solide composée d'un métal et d'un autre élément. Un alliage contient une ou plusieurs des trois: une solution solide des éléments; Un mélange de phases métalliques; Un composé intermétallique sans limite distincte entre les phases. Les alliages à solution solide donnent une seule microstructure en phase solide, tandis que les solutions partielles présentent deux phases ou plus qui peuvent être ou non homogènes en distribution selon l'histoire thermique du matériau. Un composé inter-métallique a un autre alliage ou un métal pur incorporé dans un autre métal pur. Les alliages sont utilisés dans certaines applications, où leurs propriétés sont supérieures à celles des éléments composant pure pour une application donnée. Des exemples d'alliages sont l'acier, la soudure, le laiton, l'étain, le bronze phosphoreux et un amalgame. Les constituants d'alliage sont habituellement mesurés en masse. Les alliages sont généralement classés comme des alliages substitutifs ou interstitiels, selon l'agencement atomique qui forme l'alliage. Ils peuvent être classés comme homogènes, hétérogènes ou intermétaliques.
