Calais
Calais est une ville et un grand port de ferry dans le nord de la France dans le département du Pas-de-Calais, dont il est une sous-préfecture. Bien que Calais soit de loin la plus grande ville du Pas-de-Calais, la capitale du département est la troisième plus grande ville d'Arras. La population de la région métropolitaine au recensement de 1999 était de 125 584. Calais domine le détroit de Dover, le point le plus étroit de la Manche, qui ne mesure que 34 km de large ici, et est la ville française la plus proche d'Angleterre. Les falaises blanches de Dover peuvent facilement être vues sur un jour clair de Calais. Calais est un grand port pour les ferries entre la France et l'Angleterre, et depuis 1994, le tunnel sous la Manche a relié les environs de Coquelles à Folkestone par voie ferrée. En raison de sa position, Calais depuis le Moyen Âge a été un port majeur et un centre très important pour le transport et le commerce avec l'Angleterre. Il a été annexé par Edward III d'Angleterre en 1347 et est devenu un centre prospère pour la production de laine. Calais était une possession territoriale de l'Angleterre jusqu'à sa capture par la France en 1558. La ville est appelée le «joyau le plus brillant de la couronne anglaise» en raison de sa grande importance comme porte d'entrée pour les métiers de l'étain, du plomb, de la dentelle et de la laine.
