La chimiotaxie est le mouvement d'un organisme en réponse à un stimulus chimique. Les cellules somatiques, les bactéries et d'autres organismes monocellulaires ou multicellulaires dirigent leurs mouvements selon certains produits chimiques dans leur environnement. Ceci est important pour que les bactéries trouvent de la nourriture en nageant vers la concentration la plus élevée de molécules alimentaires ou pour fuir les poisons. Dans les organismes multicellulaires, la chimiotaxie est essentielle au développement précoce et aux phases ultérieures de développement ainsi qu'à la fonction normale. En outre, il a été reconnu que les mécanismes permettant la chimiotaxie chez les animaux peuvent être submergés au cours des métastases cancéreuses. Une chimiotaxie positive se produit si le mouvement est vers une concentration plus élevée du produit chimique en question. Cependant, la chimiotaxie négative se produit si le mouvement est dans la direction opposée. Le kinesis chimiquement incité peut être appelé chimio-kinésis.
