Puces Chigoe
Le chigoe pulga ou jigger est un arthropode parasite trouvé dans la plupart des climats tropicaux et sous-tropicaux, à ne pas confondre avec la forme larvaire de Trombiculidae trouvée dans des climats plus tempérés. Il est originaire d'Amérique centrale et du Sud, et a été introduit par inadvertance par les humains en Afrique subsaharienne. À 1 mm de long, la puces chigoe est la plus petite poisse connue. L'élevage de chigoes féminines se creuse dans la peau exposée aux pieds des mammifères et reste pendant deux semaines tout en développant des œufs, au cours de laquelle elles gonflent de façon spectaculaire, provoquant parfois une irritation intense. Après ce point, la lésion de la peau ressemble à une ampoule de 5 à 10 mm avec un point noir central, qui sont les pattes postérieures exposées aux puces, les spiracles respiratoires et les organes reproducteurs. Si la puce est laissée dans la peau, des complications dangereuses peuvent survenir, y compris les infections secondaires, la perte de clous et la déformation des orteils. Ceux-ci sont relativement rares, mais de lourdes infestations combinées à des conditions insalubres augmentent considérablement la probabilité de complications. La puce parasite vit dans le sol et le sable, et se nourrit par intermittence sur des hôtes à sang chaud, comme les humains, les bovins, les moutons, les chiens, les souris et d'autres animaux.
