Le confinement était une politique des États-Unis pour empêcher la propagation du communisme à l'étranger. Une composante de la guerre froide, cette politique a été une réponse à une série de mouvements de l'Union soviétique pour élargir l'influence communiste en Europe de l'Est, en Chine, en Corée, en Afrique et au Vietnam. Il représentait une position de terrain intermédiaire entre l'apaisement et le renversement. La base de la doctrine a été articulée dans un câble de 1946 par le diplomate américain George F. Kennan. Comme description de la politique étrangère américaine, le mot est issu d'un rapport que Kennan a soumis au secrétaire américain à la Défense James Forrestal en 1947, un rapport qui a ensuite été utilisé dans un article de revue. C'est une traduction du cordon sanitaire français, utilisé pour décrire la politique occidentale envers l'Union soviétique dans les années 1920. Le terme «confinement» est le plus fortement associé aux politiques du président américain Harry Truman, y compris la création de l'Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord, un pacte de défense mutuel. Bien que le président Dwight Eisenhower ait joué avec la doctrine rivale de la reprise, il a refusé d'intervenir dans l'insurrection hongroise de 1956. Le président Lyndon Johnson a cité le confinement comme justification de ses politiques au Vietnam.
