Dans la philosophie et la logique, la contingence est le statut des propositions qui ne sont ni vraies dans toutes les évaluations possibles ni fausses dans toutes les évaluations possibles. Une proposition contingente n'est ni nécessairement vraie ni nécessairement fausse. Les propositions qui sont contingentes peuvent être telles qu'elles contiennent des connectifs logiques qui, avec la valeur de vérité de l'une de ses parties atomiques, déterminent la valeur de vérité de la proposition. Ceci veut dire que la valeur de vérité de la proposition dépend des valeurs de vérité des phrases qui la composent. Les propositions contingentes dépendent des faits, alors que les propositions analytiques sont vraies sans tenir compte des faits sur lesquels elles parlent. Outre les propositions contingentes, il y a au moins trois autres classes de propositions, dont certaines se chevauchent: ▪ Les propositions tautologiques, qui doivent être vraies, peu importe ce que les circonstances sont ou pourraient être. ▪ Contradictions qui doivent nécessairement être fausses, peu importe les circonstances ou les circonstances. ▪ Les propositions possibles, qui sont vraies ou qui pourraient être vraies dans certaines circonstances.
