En mathématiques, la courbure est l'un des nombreux concepts lâchement liés dans différentes zones géométriques. Intuitivement, la courbure est la quantité par laquelle un objet géométrique dévie d'être plat, ou directement dans le cas d'une ligne, mais cela est défini de différentes manières selon le contexte. Il existe une distinction clé entre la courbure extrinsèque, qui est définie pour les objets incorporés dans un autre espace de manière à se rapporter au rayon de courbure des cercles qui touchent l'objet et à la courbure intrinsèque définie à chaque point dans un collecteur riemannien. Cet article traite principalement du premier concept. L'exemple canonique de la courbure extrinsèque est celui d'un cercle qui a partout une courbure égale à la réciproque de son rayon. Les cercles plus petits se courbent plus fortement et ont donc une courbure plus élevée. La courbure d'une courbe lisse est définie comme la courbure de son cercle osculant à chaque point. Plus souvent, il s'agit d'une quantité scalaire, mais on peut aussi définir un vecteur de courbure qui prend en compte la direction du virage ainsi que sa netteté.
