Ulex
Ulex est un genre de plantes à fleurs dans la famille des Fabaceae. Le genre comprend environ 20 espèces d'arbustes à feuilles persistantes épineuses dans la sous-famille Faboideae de la famille des pois Fabaceae. Les espèces sont originaires de régions de l'Europe occidentale et du nord-ouest de l'Afrique, avec la majorité des espèces d'Iberia. Gorse est étroitement lié aux balais et, comme eux, a des tiges vertes et des feuilles très petites et adapté aux conditions de sécheresse. Cependant, il diffère dans son extrême épilation, les pousses étant modifiées en épines ramifiées de 1 à 4 centimètres de long, qui remplacent presque entièrement les feuilles en tant que organes photosynthétiques fonctionnels de la plante. Les feuilles de jeunes plantes sont trifoliées, mais dans les plantes matures elles sont réduites à des écailles ou à de petites épines. Toutes les espèces ont des fleurs jaunes, généralement voyantes, certaines avec une très longue saison de floraison.
