En mathématiques, le gradient est une généralisation du concept habituel de dérivée aux fonctions de plusieurs variables. Si f est une fonction différentiable et scalaire de plusieurs variables, son gradient est le vecteur dont les composants sont les dérivées partielles n de f. C'est donc une fonction vectorielle. De manière similaire à la dérivée habituelle, le gradient représente la pente de la tangente du graphe de la fonction. Plus précisément, le gradient pointe dans la direction du plus grand taux d'augmentation de la fonction et sa grandeur est la pente du graphe dans cette direction. Les composantes du dégradé dans les coordonnées sont les coefficients des variables dans l'équation de l'espace tangent au graphique. Cette propriété caractéristique du dégradé lui permet de définir indépendamment d'un choix de système de coordonnées, en tant que champ vectoriel dont les composants d'un système de coordonnées se transforment en passant d'un système de coordonnées à un autre. Le jacobien est la généralisation du gradient pour les fonctions vectorielles de plusieurs variables et des cartes différentiables entre les espaces euclidiens ou, plus généralement, les collecteurs.
