Une langue pidgin / pɪdʒɨn /, ou pidgin, est une version simplifiée d'une langue qui se développe comme moyen de communication entre deux ou plusieurs groupes qui n'ont pas de langue en commun. Il est le plus souvent utilisé dans des situations telles que le commerce, ou lorsque les deux groupes parlent des langues différentes de la langue du pays dans lequel ils résident. Fondamentalement, un pidgin est un moyen simplifié de communication linguistique, car il est construit impromptu, ou par convention, entre individus ou groupes de personnes. Un pidgin n'est pas la langue maternelle d'une communauté de discours, mais est plutôt appris en tant que langue seconde. Un pidgin peut être construit à partir de mots, de sons ou de langage corporel provenant de plusieurs autres langues et cultures. Pidgins permet aux personnes ou à un groupe de personnes de communiquer entre elles sans avoir de similitudes dans la langue. Pidgins a généralement peu de prestige par rapport à d'autres langues. Toutes les formes simplifiées ou «cassées» d'une langue ne sont pas requises. Chaque pidgin a ses propres normes d'utilisation qui doivent être appris pour la maîtrise du pidgin.
