La reproduction est le processus biologique par lequel de nouveaux «organismes naturels» sont produits à partir de leurs «parents». La reproduction est une caractéristique fondamentale de toute vie connue; Chaque organisme individuel existe à la suite de la reproduction. Les méthodes connues de reproduction sont largement regroupées en deux types principaux: sexuel et asexué. Dans la reproduction asexuée, un individu peut se reproduire sans implication avec un autre individu de cette espèce. La division d'une cellule bactérienne en deux cellules filles est un exemple de reproduction asexuée. La reproduction asexuée ne se limite toutefois pas aux organismes monocellulaires. La plupart des plantes ont la possibilité de se reproduire de manière asexuée et on pense que les espèces de fourmis Mycocepurus smithii se reproduisent entièrement par des moyens asexués. La reproduction sexuelle nécessite généralement l'implication de deux individus ou gamètes, chacun de type de sexe opposé. La propagation d'organismes peut également se produire par clonage.
