Salamandre
Les salamandres sont l'une des quelque 655 espèces existantes et toutes les espèces éteintes d'amphibiens dans l'ordre Caudata. Les espèces actuelles sont souvent regroupées sous le terme Urodela. Ils se caractérisent généralement par un aspect superficiellement lézard, avec des corps minces, des museaux émoussés, des membres courts se projetant perpendiculairement au corps et la présence d'une queue chez la larve et l'adulte. Les salamandres sont presque entièrement limitées à l'hémisphère nord et se trouvent dans l'écozone Holarctique avec quelques espèces présentes dans la zone néotropique. Les salamandres n'ont jamais plus de quatre orteils sur leurs pattes avant et cinq sur leurs jambes arrière, mais certaines espèces ont moins de chiffres et d'autres n'ont pas de membres postérieurs. Leur peau perméable les rend généralement dépendantes des habitats dans ou à proximité de l'eau ou d'autres endroits frais et humides. Certaines espèces de salamandre sont complètement aquatiques tout au long de leur vie, certaines prennent l'eau par intermittence et d'autres sont entièrement terrestres en tant qu'adultes. Unique parmi les vertébrés, ils sont capables de régénérer les membres perdus, ainsi que d'autres parties endommagées du corps.
