Servage
Le servage est le statut des paysans sous la féodalité, en particulier le manorialisme. C'était une condition de servitude qui s'est développée principalement pendant le Haut Moyen Âge en Europe et a duré dans certains pays jusqu'au milieu du 19ème siècle. Les Serfs qui occupaient un terrain étaient obligés de travailler pour le Seigneur du Manoir qui possédait cette terre, et en retour avaient droit à la protection, à la justice et au droit d'exploiter certains domaines du manoir pour maintenir leur propre subsistance. Les serfs étaient souvent obligés non seulement de travailler sur les champs du seigneur, mais aussi ses mines, leurs forêts et leurs routes. Le manoir a formé l'unité basique de la société féodale et le Seigneur du Manoir et ses serfs étaient liés légalement, économiquement et socialement. Les Serfs formaient la classe sociale la plus basse de la société féodale. Le déclin du servage en Europe occidentale a parfois été attribué à la mort noire, qui a atteint l'Europe en 1347, bien que le déclin ait commencé avant cette date. Le servage est devenu de plus en plus rare dans la majeure partie de l'Europe occidentale après la Renaissance, mais à l'inverse, il s'est développé en Europe centrale et orientale, où il avait été auparavant moins fréquent.
