Ses origines sont le latin serviens, «celui qui sert», à travers le terme français sergent. Dans la plupart des armées, le grade de sergent est classé par l'OTAN comme OR-5 et correspond au commandement d'une équipe. Dans les armées du Commonwealth, c'est un rang supérieur OR-6, correspondant à peu près à un peloton second commandant.
