Agitateur magnétique
Un agitateur magnétique ou un mélangeur magnétique est un dispositif de laboratoire qui emploie un champ magnétique rotatif pour provoquer une barre d'agitation (également appelée «puce») immergée dans un liquide pour faire tourner très rapidement, en l'agitant ainsi. Le champ de rotation peut être créé soit par un aimant rotatif, soit par un ensemble d'électroaimants fixes, placé sous le vaisseau avec le liquide. Étant donné que le verre n'affecte pas sensiblement un champ magnétique (il est transparent au magnétisme), et que la plupart des réactions chimiques ont lieu dans des récipients en verre (c'est-à-dire voir un bécher (verrerie) ou des flacons de laboratoire), les barres d'agitation magnétiques fonctionnent bien dans les récipients en verre. D'autre part, la taille limitée de la barre signifie que les agitateurs magnétiques ne peuvent être utilisés que pour des expériences relativement petites (moins de 4 litres). Ils ont également des difficultés à traiter des liquides visqueux ou des suspensions épaisses. Pour des volumes plus importants ou plus de liquides visqueux, une sorte d'agitation mécanique est généralement nécessaire. Les agitateurs magnétiques sont souvent utilisés en chimie et en biologie. Ils sont préférés sur les agitateurs motorisés motorisés, car ils sont plus silencieux, plus efficaces et n'ont pas de pièces externes en mouvement pour se casser ou s'user (autrement que l'aimant à barreau simple).
