La société Preston Temperance a été fondée en 1833 par Joseph Livesey, qui deviendrait chef du mouvement de tempérance et auteur de The Pledge: «Nous acceptons de nous abstenir de toutes les liqueurs d'une qualité enivrante, que ce soit la bière, le portier, le vin ou les spiritueux ardent , Sauf en tant que médicament ".
