Une tribu est considérée, historiquement ou en développement, comme un groupe social existant avant le développement de ou à l'extérieur des états. Beaucoup de gens ont utilisé le terme «société tribale» pour se référer à des sociétés organisées en grande partie sur la base de groupes de descendants sociaux, en particulier familiaux. Une tribu habituelle dans ces termes est une communauté face à face, relativement liée par des relations de parenté, des échanges réciproques et des liens forts. La «tribu» est un terme contesté en raison de ses racines dans le colonialisme. Le mot n'a pas de référent partagé, qu'il s'agisse de la forme politique, des relations de parenté ou de la culture partagée. Certains prétendent qu'il transmet une connotation négative d'un passé immuable inébranlable. Pour éviter ces implications, certains ont choisi d'utiliser les termes «groupe ethnique», ou nation à la place. Dans certains endroits, comme l'Amérique du Nord et l'Inde, les tribus sont des organisations qui ont bénéficié d'une reconnaissance légale et d'une autonomie limitée par l'État.
