Brise-vent
Un brise-vent ou une brise-vent est une plantation composée habituellement d'une ou plusieurs rangées d'arbres ou d'arbustes plantés de manière à fournir un abri contre le vent et à protéger les sols de l'érosion. Ils sont généralement plantés autour des bords des champs dans les fermes. Si elle est conçue correctement, les brise-vent autour d'une maison peuvent réduire le coût du chauffage et du refroidissement et économiser de l'énergie. Des brise-vent sont également plantés pour empêcher la neige de dériver sur les routes et même les cours. Les autres avantages comprennent la fourniture d'habitat pour la faune et, dans certaines régions, les arbres sont récoltés pour les produits du bois. Les brise-vent et les cultures intercalaires peuvent être combinés dans une pratique agricole appelée alleycropping. Les champs sont plantés dans des rangées de différentes cultures entourées de rangées d'arbres. Ces arbres fournissent des fruits, du bois ou protègent les cultures du vent. La culture de l'allée a été particulièrement réussie en Inde, en Afrique et au Brésil, où les producteurs de café ont combiné l'agriculture et la foresterie. Une autre utilisation pour une brise-vent est de filtrer une ferme à partir d'une route principale ou d'une autoroute.
