Azeka est une ville biblique située dans la partie nord-est de Juda sur la route qui va de la côte aux hauts plateaux de Judée. Dans les environs d'Azeka, il y avait une route vers Bethléem dans la vallée de Bethléem. La ville est identifiée avec le contemporain Tell Zakarie. Les fouilles archéologiques à Tell Zakarie ont commencé à la fin du 19ème siècle. Entre 1898 et 1899, l'expédition menée par Frederick Jones Bliss et Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister de la Fondation de recherche palestinienne a découvert les restes d'une ville fortifiée à partir du 10ème siècle avant JC. La ville était un élément de la fortification de la ligne Judy. Il était entouré d'un mur et fortifié par des tours. Miasto stanowiło element ufortyfikowania linii granicznej Judy. Było otoczone murem i umocnione wieżami. W źródłach pisanych miasto zostało wzmiankowane w czwartym liście z Lakisz, co dowodzi, że miało ważne znaczenie strategiczne dla Judy. O utracie pozycji po zdobyciu go przez Babilończyków świadczą nieliczne znaleziska z okresu perskiego i hellenistycznego. Za panowania Saula pod koniec XI wieku p.n.e. według 1 Księgi Samuela nieopodal Azeki w kierunku Soko Filistyni gromadzili swoje siły, aby rozpocząć wojnę z Izraelem.
