Benthos - un ensemble d'organismes animaux associés au fond des milieux d'eau douce, les étangs et les rivières et les milieux marins, y compris ceux qui sont associés à diverses structures présentes sur le fond, et donc les plantes, les algues, du gravier, des débris d'origine anthropique. La composition en espèces et l'abondance du bentose dépendent de divers facteurs biotiques et abiotiques. le type de réservoir, la profondeur du fond, les nutriments, l'oxygène, la lumière, la mobilité de l'eau et l'utilisation des prédateurs, etc. Ce concept a été introduit par Ernst Haeckel, qui incluait des organismes de tous les groupes taxonomiques. Skład gatunkowy i liczebność bentosu zależy od różnorodnych czynników biotycznych i abiotycznych – m.in. rodzaju zbiornika, głębokości dna, warunków pokarmowych, tlenowych, świetlnych, ruchliwości wód, oraz eksploatacji przez drapieżców itp. Pojęcie to wprowadził Ernst Haeckel, obejmując nim organizmy ze wszystkich grup taksonomicznych. Obecnie część bentologów zawęża to pojęcie do zoocenoz dennych określanych też jako zoobentos, ale wyróżniany jest również będący obiektem badań hydrobotaniki fitobentos budowany przez protisty roślinopodobne i rośliny oraz bakteriobentos. Niektóre organizmy zasadniczo bentosowe mogą być odrywane od dna i wchodzić w skład tychoplanktonu.
