Następnie podarował bratu lirę z jelit cielęcych i skorupy żółwia, czym złagodził gniew Apollina. W zamian otrzymał jako oznakę władzy laskę herolda, zwaną kaduceuszem, oplecioną dwoma wężami, uśmierzającą spory i kłótnie. Na początku swojego pobytu na Olimpie okradł większość bogów.
