Le rapport réfléchi / incident dépend de la fréquence du rayonnement considéré et nous pouvons donc parler en albédo monochromatique et panchromatique. S'il n'est pas spécifié, il fait référence à une moyenne sur une bande spectrale. Si la surface est suffisamment lisse, l'albédo dépendra également de l'angle d'incidence du rayonnement. Exemples: l'albédo visible de la surface récente de la neige est élevé, autour de 0.
