L'istinto o il comportamento innato è l'inclinazione intrinseca di un organismo vivente verso un particolare comportamento complesso. L'esempio più semplice di un comportamento istintivo è un modello di azione fissa, in cui una sequenza di azioni a breve o media lunghezza, senza variazioni, viene eseguita in risposta ad uno stimolo chiaramente definito. Un comportamento istintivo di scuotere l'acqua da pelliccia umida. Una tartaruga di cuoio da bambino si apre all'oceano aperto. Qualsiasi comportamento è istintivo se viene eseguito senza basarsi su un'esperienza precedente ed è quindi un'espressione di fattori biologici innati. Le tartarughe marine, appena uscite su una spiaggia, si muoveranno automaticamente verso l'oceano. Un joey si arrampica nel sacchetto della madre quando è nato. Gli aureoli comunicano danzando in direzione di una fonte di cibo senza istruzioni formali. Altri esempi includono il combattimento degli animali, il comportamento di corteggiamento animale, le funzioni di fuga interne e la costruzione di nidi. Tutti questi sono esempi di comportamenti complessi e sono quindi sostanzialmente diversi dai semplici comportamenti riflessi.
