Um almucantar é um círculo na esfera celeste paralelo ao horizonte. Duas estrelas que se encontram no mesmo almucantar têm a mesma altitude. O termo foi introduzido na astronomia européia pelo astrônomo monástico Hermann Contractus de Reichenau, da palavra árabe al-muqntarat, que significa "torto, semelhante a uma curva".
