Coluna ou pilar em arquitetura e engenharia estrutural é um elemento estrutural que transmite, através da compressão, o peso da estrutura acima para outros elementos estruturais abaixo. A good column is one that sells paper. It doesn't matter how beautifully it is written and how much you admire the author... if it doesn't sell any papers, it's not a good column. It's a terrible yardstick to use, but in the newspaper business, that's the whole thing.
It's unfortunate that a certain type of stripped-down classicism became the in-house architectural language for 20th-century fascism. Can an architectural language recover from such an association? Yes, I think it can, because in the end what you're talking about is a column and beam.
