Conclave papal
Um conclave papal é um encontro do Colégio dos Cardeais convocado para eleger um novo Bispo de Roma, também conhecido como o Papa. O papa é considerado pelos católicos romanos como o sucessor apostólico de São Pedro e o chefe terrestre da Igreja Católica Romana. O conclave tem sido o procedimento para escolher o papa por mais da metade do tempo que a igreja tem existido e é o método mais antigo para escolher o líder de uma instituição. Uma história de interferência política na seleção papal e, conseqüentemente, vagas longas entre papas, que culminaram no interregnum de 1268-1271, levaram o papa Gregório X a decretar durante o Segundo Concílio de Lyon em 1274 que os eleitores cardeais deveriam ser bloqueados em isolamento cum clave e não permitiu partir até que um novo Bispo de Roma tenha sido eleito. Conclaves são agora realizadas na Capela Sistina do Palácio Apostólico. Desde a era apostólica, o bispo de Roma, como outros bispos, foi escolhido pelo consenso do clero e dos leigos da diocese. O corpo de eleitores foi definido mais precisamente quando, em 1059, o Colégio dos Cardeais foi designado como único órgão de eleitores.
