Fortificação
As fortificações são construções militares ou edifícios concebidos para a defesa de territórios na guerra e também utilizados para solidificar o domínio em uma região durante o tempo de paz. Os seres humanos construíram trabalhos defensivos por muitos milhares de anos, em uma variedade de projetos cada vez mais complexos. O termo é derivado do latino fortis e facere. Desde a história muito antiga até os tempos modernos, as paredes têm sido uma necessidade para as cidades sobreviverem em um mundo em constante mudança de invasão e conquista. Alguns assentamentos na Civilização do Vale do Indo foram as primeiras cidades a serem fortalecidas. Na Grécia antiga, grandes paredes de pedra foram construídas na Grécia micênica, como o antigo sítio de Micenas. Um Phrourion era uma coleção fortificada de edifícios que servia de guarnição militar e era o equivalente ao castellum romano ou à fortaleza inglesa. Essas obras serviram principalmente a propósito de uma torre de vigia, para proteger certas estradas, passagens e terrenos prejudiciais ao reino. Embora menor do que uma fortaleza real, essas construções agiram como uma guarda de fronteira em vez de um ponto forte real para assistir e manter a fronteira.
