Gesto

Um gesto é uma forma de comunicação não-verbal ou comunicação não-vocal em que as ações corporais visíveis comunicam mensagens particulares, em lugar de, ou em conjunto com, a fala. Os gestos incluem movimento das mãos, rosto ou outras partes do corpo. Os gestos diferem da comunicação física não verbal que não comunica mensagens específicas, como exibições puramente expressivas, proxemias ou exibições de atenção conjunta. Os gestos permitem aos indivíduos comunicar uma variedade de sentimentos e pensamentos, do desprezo e da hostilidade à aprovação e carinho, muitas vezes junto com linguagem corporal, além de palavras quando falam. O processamento de gestos ocorre em áreas do cérebro, como as áreas de Broca e Wernicke, que são usadas pela linguagem de fala e sinal. De fato, pensa-se que a linguagem evoluiu a partir de gestos manuais. A teoria de que a linguagem evoluiu a partir de gestos manuais, denominada Teoria Gestural, remonta ao trabalho do filósofo e sacerdote do século 18, abade de Condillac, e foi revivida pelo antropólogo contemporâneo Gordon W. Hewes, em 1973, como parte de uma discussão sobre o origem da linguagem.
