Velarização
A velarização é uma articulação secundária de consoantes pelo qual a parte de trás da língua é elevada em direção ao velo durante a articulação da consoante. Embora os estudos eletroflalatográficos tenham demonstrado que existe um contínuo de possíveis graus de velarização, o IPA não oferece nenhum caminho para indicar graus de velarização, pois esta diferença não foi considerada contrastiva em nenhum idioma. Um exemplo comum de uma consoante velarizada é o aproximado lateral alveolar velarizado.
