Un argot este un limbaj secret folosit de diverse grupuri - de ex. colegi, colegi, colegi, printre multe altele - pentru a împiedica înțelegerea conversațiilor din afară. Termenul argot este de asemenea utilizat pentru a se referi la vocabularul informal specializat dintr-un anumit domeniu de studiu, ocupație sau hobby, în care acesta se suprapune cu jargon. Autorul Victor Hugo a fost unul dintre primii care argotează extensiv. El îl descrie în romanul din 1862 Les Misérables ca limbă întunecată; la un moment dat, el spune: "Ce este Argot, în mod corespunzător vorbind? Argot este limbajul mizeriei."
