Dialect
Patois este orice limbă care este considerată nestandardă, deși termenul nu este definit formal în lingvistică. Se poate referi la pidginii, creolele, dialectele și alte forme de discurs nativ sau local, dar nu de obicei la jargon sau slang, care sunt forme bazate pe vocabular de Cant. Distincțiile de clasă sunt încorporate în termen, trase între cei care vorbesc patoși și cei care vorbesc limbajul standard sau dominant în literatura de specialitate și în vorbirea publică, adică "acrolectul".
