Autonomia este un concept găsit în filosofia morală, politică și bioetică. În aceste contexte, capacitatea unui individ rațional este de a lua o decizie informată, fără constrângere. În filozofia morală și politică, autonomia este adesea folosită ca bază pentru determinarea responsabilității morale și a responsabilității față de acțiunile cuiva. Una dintre cele mai cunoscute teorii filosofice despre autonomie a fost dezvoltată de Kant. În medicină, respectul pentru autonomia pacienților este un obiectiv important, deși poate intra în conflict cu un principiu etic concurențial, și anume bunăstarea.
