Auto-guvernarea este un concept abstract care se aplică mai multor scale de organizare. Se poate referi la comportamente personale sau la unități de familie, dar mai frecvent se referă la activități la scară mai largă, adică profesii, organisme din industrie, religii și unități politice, până la și inclusiv regiuni autonome și / sau altele din statele-națiuni care se bucură de anumite drepturi suverane.
