Dreptul națiunilor la autodeterminare sau, într-o formă scurtă, dreptul la autodeterminare este principiul cardinal din dreptul internațional modern, obligatoriu, ca atare, în cadrul Organizației Națiunilor Unite ca interpretare autoritară a normelor Cartei. Acesta afirmă că națiunile bazate pe respectarea principiului egalității de șanse și a egalității de șanse egale au dreptul să-și aleagă liber suveranitatea și statutul politic internațional fără nicio constrângere sau ingerință externă care să poată fi trasate în Carta atlantică, semnată la 14 august 1941, de Franklin D. Roosevelt, președintele Statelor Unite ale Americii, și Winston Churchill, prim-ministru al Regatului Unit care a promis cele opt puncte principale ale Cartei. Principiul nu precizează modul în care trebuie luată decizia sau care ar trebui să fie rezultatul, indiferent dacă este vorba despre independență, federație, protecție, o anumită formă de autonomie sau chiar o asimilare totală. Nici nu afirmă ce ar trebui să fie delimitarea dintre națiuni - sau chiar ceea ce constituie o națiune. De fapt, există definiții conflictuale și criterii juridice pentru a determina care grupuri pot pretinde în mod legitim dreptul la autodeterminare.
