Avangarda sunt oameni sau lucrări experimentale sau inovatoare, în special în ceea ce privește arta, cultura și politica. Avangarda împinge granițele a ceea ce este acceptat drept normă sau status quo, în primul rând în domeniul cultural. Avangarda este considerată de unii ca un semn distinctiv al modernismului, distinct de postmodernism. Mulți artiști s-au aliniat cu mișcarea avangardistă și continuă să facă acest lucru, urmărind o istorie de la Dada prin intermediul situației la artiști postmoderni, cum ar fi poeții limbi din jurul anului 1981. Avangarda promovează de asemenea reforme sociale radicale. Acest sens a fost evocat de Saint Simonian Olinde Rodrigues în eseul său "L'artiste, le savant et l'industriel", care conține prima utilizare înregistrată a "avangardei" în sensul său obișnuit: acolo, Rodrigues invită artiștii să "servească drept avangardă", insistând că "puterea artelor este într-adevăr cea mai imediată și cea mai rapidă cale" către reforma socială, politică și economică.

O altă definiție a avangardei este aceea a artiștilor, etc., a ideilor sau a tehnicilor acestora. Avant Garda este de asemenea radicală; îndrăzneț.
