Asediu
Un asediu este o blocadă militară a unui oraș sau a unei cetăți cu intenția de cucerire prin uzură sau asalt. Termenul provine de la sedere, latină pentru "a sta". Războiul de război este o formă de conflict constant și de intensitate redusă, caracterizat de o parte care deține o poziție puternică, statică defensivă. În consecință, o oportunitate de negociere între combatanți nu este neobișnuită, deoarece proximitatea și avantajul fluctuant pot încuraja diplomația. Un asediu are loc atunci când un atacator întâlnește un oraș sau o cetate care nu poate fi luată cu ușurință printr-o lovitură de stat majoră și refuză să se predea. Siegele implică înconjurarea țintei și blocarea armamentului sau evadarea trupelor sau furnizarea de provizii, în mod tipic cuplate cu încercările de a reduce fortificațiile prin intermediul motoarelor de asediu, bombardament de artilerie, exploatare minieră sau folosirea înșelăciunii sau trădării pentru a ocoli apărarea. În lipsa unui rezultat militar, asediile pot fi adesea hotărâte prin înfometare, sete sau boală, care pot afecta fie pe atacator, fie pe apărător. Sieges probabil predate dezvoltarea orașelor ca centre mari de populație.
