Comedie
Comedia, în sensul contemporan al termenului, este orice discurs sau lucrare destinată, în general, să fie plină de umor sau să amuze prin inducerea de râs, mai ales în teatru, televiziune, film și comedie de stand-up. Acest sentiment al termenului trebuie distins atent de cel academic, și anume teatrul de benzi desenate, a cărui origine occidentală se regăsește în Grecia Antică. În democrația ateniană, opinia publică a alegătorilor a fost influențată de satira politică a poeților comici ai teatrelor. Genul teatral poate fi pur și simplu descris ca o performanță dramatică, care alunecă două societăți unul împotriva celuilalt într-un amuzant agon sau conflict. Northrop Frye a ilustrat cele două laturi opuse ca o "Societate a Tineretului" și o "Societate a Vechiului", dar această dihotomie este rar descrisă ca o explicație cu totul satisfăcătoare. O viziune mai târzie caracterizează agoniul esențial al comediei ca o luptă între un tânăr relativ neputincios și convențiile societății care pun obstacole în calea speranțelor sale.
