În timpul unei zile siderale, un obiect astronomic va traversa meridianul de două ori: o dată la culmea superioară, când este la cel mai înalt punct de pe pământ și o dată la culminarea inferioară, punctul său cel mai de jos. Adesea, culminarea este folosită pentru a însemna culmea superioară. Altitudinea unui obiect în grade la culmea superioară este egală cu, unde L este latitudinea observatorului și D este declinația obiectului. În general, soarele este vizibil la culmea superioară și nu este vizibil la punctul culminant inferior. Dar în timpul iernii, lângă Polul Nord, soarele se află sub orizontul ambelor culminări. În cea mai mare parte a emisferei nordice, Polaris, "Steaua de Nord" și restul stelelor constelației Ursa Minor pot fi văzute să se rotească în jurul polului ceresc și sunt toate vizibile la ambele culminări, atât timp cât cerul este întunecat destul. Asemenea stele, care nu se stabilesc niciodată la locul observatorului, sunt descrise ca fiind circumpolare.
