Un deșert este o zonă inundabilă de pământ unde se produce puțin precipitații și, în consecință, condițiile de viață sunt ostile pentru viața plantelor și a animalelor. Lipsa vegetației expune suprafața neprotejată a pământului la procesele de denudare. Aproximativ o treime din suprafata pamantului este arid sau semi-arid.
