Dezastru
Un dezastru reprezintă un pericol natural sau provocat de om care are ca rezultat un eveniment de proporții substanțiale care provoacă pagube sau distrugeri fizice semnificative, pierderi de vieți omenești sau schimbări drastice în mediul înconjurător. Un dezastru poate fi definit ostentativ ca orice eveniment tragic care rezultă din evenimente precum cutremure, inundații, accidente catastrofale, incendii sau explozii. Este un fenomen care poate provoca daune vieții și proprietății și poate distruge viața economică, socială și culturală a oamenilor. În mediul academic contemporan, dezastrele sunt văzute ca o consecință a unui risc gestionat în mod necorespunzător. Aceste riscuri sunt rezultatul unei combinații a pericolelor și vulnerabilității. Pericolele care lovesc zonele cu vulnerabilitate scăzută nu vor deveni niciodată dezastre, așa cum este cazul în regiunile nelocuite. Țările în curs de dezvoltare suferă cele mai mari costuri în urma unui dezastru - peste 95% din decesele cauzate de dezastre au loc în țările în curs de dezvoltare, iar pierderile din cauza dezastrelor naturale sunt de 20 de ori mai mari în țările în curs de dezvoltare decât în țările industrializate.
