În fizică, energia este o proprietate a obiectelor, transferabile între ele prin interacțiuni fundamentale, care pot fi transformate în formă, dar nu create sau distruse. Joule-ul este unitatea de energie SI, bazată pe cantitatea transferată unui obiect prin lucrul mecanic de mutare cu 1 metru față de o forță de 1 newton.
