Emigrarea este actul de a părăsi țara sau regiunea cu intenția de a se stabili definitiv în altul. Este la fel ca și imigrația, dar din perspectiva țării de origine. Mișcarea umană, în general, este numită migrație. Există multe motive pentru care oamenii ar putea alege să emigreze; aceste motive pot fi împărțite în factori de "tragere" și "împingere". Oportunitate economică mai bună este un exemplu de factor de "tragere", ca și o căutare a unui climat mai bun. Temerile legate de sărăcie sau de discriminare religioasă sau politică sunt factori "împingători". Căutarea unui refugiu din condiții care nu sunt direct realizate de cineva este intermediară pentru posibila emigrare. Emigrația a avut o influență profundă asupra lumii în secolele 18, 19, 20 și 21. Printre exemplele amintite se numără milioane de oameni care au părăsit Europa în secolele al XVIII-lea și al XIX-lea sau emigrarea recentă a mexicanilor în Statele Unite. Termenul "emigrare" sugerează de obicei mișcarea voluntară.
