Teoria speranței propune ca un individ să decidă să se comporte sau să acționeze într-un anumit mod deoarece sunt motivați să aleagă un comportament specific față de alte comportamente datorită așteptărilor pe care le va avea rezultatul acelui comportament selectat. În esență, motivația selecției comportamentului este determinată de dorința rezultatului. Cu toate acestea, nucleul teoriei este procesul cognitiv al modului în care un individ procesează diferitele elemente motivaționale. Acest lucru este făcut înainte de a face alegerea finală.
