Teoria supozițiilor a reprezentat o ramură a logicii medievale, care a avut drept scop să ofere conturi de aspecte asemănătoare cu conturile moderne de referință, pluralitate, tensionare și modalitate, într-un context aristotelian. Filosofi precum John Buridan, William de Ockham, William de Sherwood, Walter Burley și Peter de Spania au fost principalii săi dezvoltatori. Până în secolul al XIV-lea, se pare că a atins în cel puțin două teorii destul de distincte, teoria "presupunerii corecte" care include o "amplificare" și seamănă mult cu o teorie de referință și cu teoria "modurilor de presupunere" funcția nu este clară.
