Federaţie
O federație, cunoscută și sub numele de stat federal, este o entitate politică caracterizată printr-o uniune de state sau regiuni autonome care se află sub un guvern central. În cadrul unei federații, statutul de autoguvernare al statelor componente, precum și împărțirea puterii între ele și guvernul central, sunt de obicei înrădăcinate constituțional și nu pot fi modificate printr-o decizie unilaterală a fiecărui partid, a statelor sau a federalilor organism politic. Structura guvernamentală sau constituțională găsită într-o federație este cunoscută sub numele de federalism. Poate fi considerat opusul altui sistem, statul unitar. Germania cu șaisprezece Länder este un exemplu de federație, în timp ce Austria vecină și Bundesländerul ei era un stat unitar cu diviziuni administrative care deveneau federalizate, iar Franța învecinată era, întotdeauna, unitară. Federațiile pot fi multietnice și acoperă o arie largă de teritoriu, deși nici nu este neapărat cazul.
