O fregată / frɪɡɨt / este oricare dintre mai multe tipuri de nave de război, termenul fiind folosit pentru nave de diferite mărimi și roluri în ultimele câteva secole. În secolul al 17-lea, termenul a fost folosit pentru orice navă de război construită pentru viteză și manevrabilitate, descrierea adesea folosită fiind "construită în fregate". Acestea ar putea fi nave de război purtând principala lor baterie de pistoale montate pe un singur punte sau pe două punți. Termenul era folosit, în general, pentru navele prea mici pentru a se afla în linia de luptă, deși navele timpurii de luptă erau frecvent numite fregate atunci când erau construite pentru viteză.
